Size: M (38″)
Sizes are what I used to get gauge, not necessarily actual pattern recommendations
#7, 29″ circular
#8, 29″ circular
I skipped using the smallest size for cast on since I went with a slightly tighter cast on method than is called for in the pattern.
Brooklyn Tweed (shop link)
Shelter in Snowbound colorway, 5 skeins
New Techniques Learned
I ended up leaving off the sleeves. Also, I forgot to switch back to the larger needles for the second half of the body, so the front ended up longer than the back. That works out okay since, aside from ribbing length on the hem, the construction doesn’t care which is front or back. So I just wear it “backwards” *shrug*
13 February: After finishing the body of the sweater and panicking about the finished shape, I decided to block it before starting on the sleeves to be sure I didn’t need to frog and start over. Once it was blocked, I had a chance to try it on and I loved it! The shoulders are just wide enough to be just slightly more than a cap sleeve. It’s perfect. I’m sending back the 4 remaining skeins of yarn and plan to make another one when the color I want comes back in stock. So good.
4 February: After several days of swatching, I knocked out the first 9 inches of the sweater body. I’m hoping to divide for the sleeves today!
1 February: Shelter got here and I swatched it up. I was spot on in my stitch gauge but my row gauge was wildly off no matter which needles I swatched with. After an Instagram pep talk, I finally just decided to go ahead with the pattern. Luckily, a good portion of the pattern is written in finished inches, rather than entirely in numbers of rows, so I hope I’ll be able to adjust as I go.
28 January: Cast on using the cable cast on method rather than the pattern recommended method. #goingrogue
15 January: for the first time, possibly in my life, I’m knitting with the pattern-recommended yarn. I swatched this sweater with the lovely Knit Picks Color Mist yarn, but just wasn’t happy with the gauge I was getting. I’m going to swatch up the Fiona sweater from my 2018 Knit List with the Color Mist to see if it works out better with that pattern while I wait for the Shelter to get here.
4 January 2018: I’m 4 rows short after blocking, and my stitch gauge is off by 2 stitches.
November 2017: swatched! Before blocking I’m short on row-gauge by a few rows, but I’m spot on the stitch-gauge.
